Seniors take the initiative to help their peers

Seniors at retirement community Millcreek hosted a yard sale to raise money for Meals on Wheels

The ongoing economic crisis story is filled with stories of jobs being lost, community programs being cut or reduced, and families having trouble making ends meet. But one such story in particular caught the attention of the seniors and staff at retirement community Millcreek by Encore Senior Living, and they decided to take action. In 2009 and 2010, the seniors at Millcreek hosted a Charity Yard Sale to benefit the Salt Lake County Aging Services’ Meals on Wheels program.

This year, the sale raised $1,108.

The Meals on Wheels program in Salt Lake County delivers more than 1,000 hot noon meals to frail and isolated older adults six days a week. The program is facing budget cuts and a decrease in the number of volunteers.

The Charity Yard Sale featured beds, dressers, computers, recliners, bookshelves, clothing, and World War II collectibles.
